Fine George III Flame Mahogany Bachelor's Chest of Drawers C.1770

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A fine George III mahogany bachelor's chest of drawers, dating from the late eighteenth century, circa 1770.

Constructed in richly figured flame mahogany, the chest is of particularly desirable compact proportions, making it equally suited to a bedroom, hallway or reception room. The moulded top sits above a useful brushing slide and four graduated long drawers, each retaining oak linings and fitted with brass swan-neck handles. The chest stands on bracket feet and displays the elegant proportions and restrained craftsmanship characteristic of the George III period.

Compact Georgian chests of this quality remain highly sought after for their versatility and timeless design. This example retains an excellent colour and mellow patina acquired over more than two centuries and would make an attractive addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 82 cm

Width: 83 cm

Depth: 51 cm

CONDITION

There are the expected marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. The brass handles are period replacements. There is evidence of historic, well-executed restoration, including localised veneer repairs and replacement of one runner for the brushing slide. The moulding to the left-hand front corner of the top sits slightly proud and the brushing slide operates a little stiffly. Minor splits are present to some of the oak drawer linings. The drawers run well, the joints remain solid and the chest presents beautifully overall with an attractive colour and rich patina.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III bachelors chest is a compact 18th-century English chest of drawers, designed with low proportions and often incorporating a pull-out brushing slide or folding top surface.

Georgian chests of drawers were constructed with oak or pine carcasses and finished with flame mahogany veneers, complemented by cast brass handles and iron keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original locks, and natural oxidisation on the pine or oak internal drawer linings.

A Georgian bachelors chest functions as a focal accent in neutral hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms, providing a balance when paired with modern artwork or contemporary ceramic lighting.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, applying beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, and avoiding placement near direct heat or sunlight.
