Portrait of a Seductive Young Lady, Early 19th Century French School

19th century
Description

An Early 19th Century French School Portrait of a Seductive Young Lady

Medium: Pastel on paper

Period: Circa 1800-1840

Provenance: From a private London collection

Overall measurements with the frame are 76cm x 63cm x 4cm and the pastel painting measured at 69cm x 57cm

A beautifully composed, early to early mid 19th century French School half–length pastel portrait of a seductive young lady in period attire. Created with good technical skill, the painting displays soft but deep tonality with skilful use of the medium to create lovely contrasting skin tones with very fine and detailed attention to the sitter's face and hair.

The present work is exceptional in execution and composition. It is particularly beautiful in its lovely gilt frame. It is a most attractive 19th century French pastel half-length bust portrait which we think would suit a variety of interiors and decors. A fine and highly decorative period pastel composition.

Condition Report: The pastel has been laid on panel in the peripheral areas and is believed to date from the time of its original composition. A cleaning and some fine repairs, invisible to the naked eye, have been made to the outer right margin. The work is in good condition overall and has a beautiful tone. Its original oval gilt frame, presumably restored, is in good condition.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French School portraiture from the early nineteenth century bridges Neoclassicism and Romanticism, characterised by soft tonal shading, classical drapery, and a focus on intimate, expressive human subjects.

Works from this period were typically executed in oil or soft pastel on paper, vellum, or stretched canvas, and subsequently housed in carved giltwood frames with beaded moulding.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural craquelure or age-related softening of pigments, genuine surface oxidisation on the gilded frame, and historical joinery techniques on the frame backboard.

Position the portrait as a focal point above a console table or integrate it into a curated gallery wall alongside contrasting modern black-and-white photography for visual balance.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture sources; dust the giltwood frame gently with a dry soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
