Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pocket nutmeg graters became popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when nutmeg was an expensive luxury spice. Individuals carried personal graters to add freshly grated nutmeg to hot punch, mulled wine, or food while travelling or dining away from home.

Georgian nutmeg graters were constructed from a range of metals depending on wealth, including silver, silver plate, tinplate, brass, and steel. The grating plate itself was typically made of perforated steel or iron to maintain a sharp edge.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-punched perforations on the rasp plate, hand-fitted five-part hinges, and surface patination consistent with age. Metal surfaces often display natural oxidisation and signs of historical hand manufacturing.

These small tactile objects are suitable for display inside glass curio cabinets, arranged on a bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or placed on a tray within a kitchen counter display of historical cooking implements.

To prevent further oxidisation and corrosion, keep metal graters in a moisture-free environment. Remove dust with a soft, dry brush and avoid applying water or harsh chemical cleaners that could strip the natural historical patina.
