With vibrancy of colours so typical of the school, the painting is clearly well composed and by the hand of an old master of the period.
The "Lamentation of Christ" depicts the immediate aftermath of Christ's crucifixion, where his body is mourned by his followers. This scene is a common subject in Christian art, often appearing in cycles of the Life of Christ and as individual works. A specific type of Lamentation, known as the Pietà, focuses on Mary cradling the dead Christ.
Much of the work produced by the Veronese School of artists was religious in theme. The painter has captured the atmosphere superbly, imbuing the scene with the a sense of great sorrow and grief. Many of the religious themed paintings from the school have the use of strong tonality and vibrancy contrasting with darkened backgrounds.
The Veronese school of painting in the 17th century refers to artists who continued the style and traditions established by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) in Venice during the late 16th century. While Veronese himself died in 1588, his workshop continued under his brother and sons, and his influence permeated Venetian art in the 17th century.
This period is characterised by a continuation of Veronese's vibrant colour palettes, elaborate compositions, and focus on historical and religious narratives. Veronese's workshop, initially led by his brother Benedetto and later by his sons Gabriele and Carlo, remained active until the early 17th century.
Many Venetian painters in the early 17th century drew inspiration from Veronese, Tintoretto, and Titian, leading to a "Neo-Veronesian" movement.
Condition report. No repairs to the canvas are apparent. The painting has had recent cleaning and retouching over abrasion and some areas of paint loss have been infilled and carefully retouched. The original paintwork retains good tonality. The canvas is in adequate tension and does not require lining. There is craquelure thought commensurate with age. The painting is in good condition for its antiquity. The frame has been commissioned by ourselves for the painting and will be supplied with the painting mounted within it as depicted in the photographs.
