A netsuke is a small, hand-carved toggle originating in 17th-century Japan, designed to anchor personal containers like inro or sagemono to a kimono sash (obi). Because traditional kimonos lacked pockets, these functional carved counterweights prevented cords from slipping through the sash.

During the Edo period, artisans commonly carved netsuke from dense hardwoods like boxwood, cherry wood, and ebony, as well as marine ivory, stag antler, and horn. Inlaid details, such as eyes, were frequently crafted from glass, amber, or horn.

Authentic 19th-century netsuke display functional cord holes (himotoshi), natural surface patina from handling, and subtle carving wear around edges. Genuine pieces feature hand-carved details and balanced weight, rather than uniform modern machine moulding.
