Victorian 18ct Gold Sapphire and Diamond Boat Ring Antique 1890

19th century
Description

A splendid antique sapphire and diamond ring from the late Victorian period, glowing with history and sentiment.

Hand crafted in rich 18ct yellow gold, this classic boat ring is set with three old mine cut diamonds interspersed by two vivid cornflower blue sapphires. The old cut diamonds are full of character, exhibiting the subtle sparkle and depth that only antique stones can provide.

Each gemstone is securely set in a traditional bateau-style gallery that curves gracefully along the finger, blending elegance and strength. The thick gold band and robust setting suggest it may have been made for a gentleman, though its timeless design makes it equally beautiful for a woman to wear.

This is a ring with presence and romance – a fine piece of Victorian craftsmanship perfect as a meaningful gift or a striking alternative engagement ring.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian boat ring features a setting shaped like an elongated oval or boat, known as a navette shape, designed to hold gemstones flush within the band. Popular during the late 19th century, this style provided protection to precious stones while presenting a smooth profile on the finger.

Late Victorian rings were commonly crafted in 18ct yellow gold, prized for its durability and warm tone. Natural sapphires and old-cut diamonds were frequently set into these bands using carved claw mounts or flush star settings.

Authentic Victorian pieces often feature hallmarks stamped inside the band indicating gold purity, assay town, and year mark. Design features such as hand-carved side galleries, old European or mine-cut diamonds, and flush boat-shaped settings help identify period manufacture.

This flat-profile style can be worn as an individual statement ring or paired alongside modern yellow gold bands for a layered aesthetic. Its low setting renders it appropriate for daily wear.

Clean the setting gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush to remove debris behind the stones. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners that may compromise antique settings or natural gemstone inclusions.
