Gerard Robinson Fine Art and Antiques has dated this Fossilised Stegodon Molar Tooth to a period before the 16th Century.
They were prevalent in Africa and Southeast Asia, on Indonesian islands where this fossil came from the stegadon population was a dwarfed variety. Stegodons had long straight tusks and their molar teeth back grinding teeth began to show the beginnings of ridged forms which characterise those of elephants. They evolved about ten million ears ago and died out around one million years ago. They are believed to have had a straight back shape, probably dense fur a low single domed head, straight tusks and a medium tail ,because of the ridged form of their molar teeth giving a modest chewing ability the diet of the stegodont is believed to be woodland shrubs and soft leaves
