Victorian Chippendale Mirror

19th century
Description

A large and fine quality rectangular mirror mostly likely part of an extensive Chippendale dining suite from the late Victorian period and would have been placed above the serving buffet sideboard or maybe the fireplace. In the day, this would have been part of a special commission and made to order by a top cabinet making firm. The mirror is bevelled and the mahogany frame is set with a gadrooned border with a bead of egg and dart. The crested top is set above a tablet of foliate swirls , a central urn and mythical creatures to either side. This is a heavy mirror befitting it's craftsmanship and has survived in superb condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale Revival mirrors from the Victorian era draw inspiration from eighteenth-century designs by Thomas Chippendale, characterized by carved pediments, urn crestings, scrollwork, and rich dark timbers like mahogany.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine core frameworks, housing silvered or mercurial glass plates with bevelled edges.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, pine backboards fastened with historical screws or nails, subtle oxidisation or spotting on the mirror plate, and crisp hand-carved detailing.

Positioning a carved dark wood mirror above a minimal modern sideboard or mantelpiece provides structural contrast, grounding light-toned interiors while reflecting natural light.

Dust the carved woodwork regularly using a dry microfiber cloth and apply beeswax sparingly; avoid spraying glass cleaner directly onto the mirror surface to prevent liquid from seeping into the wooden rebate.
