Chamberlain Worcester "Dragon in Compartments" Bowl, C.1815, with Mahogany Stand

A rare antique porcelain punch bowl produced by Chamberlain Worcester circa 1815. The bowl is decorated in the "Dragon in Compartments" pattern, also referred to as "Bengal Tiger". This pattern is inspired by Chinese Kangxi porcelain and features dragons and mythical beasts, each within its own bordered compartment, separated by gilt lines. The central medallion depicts a chrysanthemum, symbolising longevity. The exterior is hand-painted in iron-red, cobalt blue, puce, pale green, yellow, and enriched with extensive gilding.

The factory mark "Chamberlain’s Worcester" is hand-written in iron-red enamel on the base, indicating production under the Chamberlain family’s ownership. The precision of the mark suggests a prestigious commission. The original heavy wooden stand, crafted from solid mahogany with a rich reddish tone, is included and remains in excellent condition.

Bowls of this type, especially with original stands and period script marks, are rare survivors. This example compares closely to pieces held in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The "Dragon in Compartments" pattern (ornament) is among the most valuable and coveted in the entire history of English porcelain. Pieces decorated in this pattern are actively sought after by collectors worldwide

Condition:

Excellent condition for age. On one side, on the upper rim, there is a fine hairline crack that is barely visible, minor wear to the gilt rim and some surface wear to the interior enamels. No chips, cracks or restoration. Stand is in excellent order.
