Chamberlain Worcester Dessert Plate, "Dragon in Compartments", C.1815

Description

A superb Regency-period dessert plate by Chamberlain Worcester, featuring the renowned "Dragon in Compartments" pattern. The segmented decoration is meticulously painted with a single dragon, mythical beast, vases, and floral motifs, all bordered in gold. The design pays homage to Chinese Kangxi export wares, but is executed in a distinctly English palette.

The central medallion with a chrysanthemum, together with the hand-written factory mark and pattern number "75" on the reverse, authenticate this plate as original Chamberlain production during family ownership of the factory. The "Dragon in Compartments" pattern (ornament) is among the most valuable and coveted in the entire history of English porcelain. Pieces decorated in this pattern are actively sought after by collectors worldwide. Major museum collections (V\&A, British Museum) contain only a handful of examples.

Condition:

Excellent antique condition, with one small chip to the rim. No restoration or cracks. Enamels and gilding are beautifully preserved.

The Dragon in Compartments pattern, also known as the Kylin pattern, originated in English ceramics during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Inspired by imported Chinese porcelain, it features mythical beasts, scholars items, and floral motifs arranged within partitioned sectors radiating from a central rosette.

Regency era plates from manufacturers such as Chamberlains Worcester were crafted from soft-paste porcelain or early bone china. The decorative designs were executed using overglaze enamel paint and burnished gold leaf gilding applied by hand.
