Vintage Norwegian Silver & Red Enamel Butterfly Brooch

1940 - 1960
Description

A delightful Norwegian vintage silver and enamel butterfly brooch. The wings are in guilloche enamel and superbly detailed in red hues with black and white accents. A slight curve to the wings reflects the light and highlights the detail. The back of the brooch is marked 'Sterling 925 S Norway' with the mark for the well known Norwegian jewellery designer Hroar Prydz, circa 1950. There is a good fastening clasp at the back that works well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Norwegian silver enamel jewellery gained international prominence during the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, spearheaded by prominent workshops such as David-Andersen, Aksel Holmsen, and Marius Hammer. Artisans combined traditional silver smithing with delicate guilloche enamel techniques, frequently producing nature-inspired motifs like butterflies, leaves, and flowers.

These brooches are crafted using sterling silver (often stamped 925S) or gilt silver (vermeil) as the base metal. The coloured patterns are created by applying glass enamel powder over machine-engraved or engine-turned metal patterns, which is then fired at high temperatures to fuse the glass.

Authentic pieces are stamped with makers marks, purity marks (such as 925S or 830S), and country of origin marks like Norway. Inspecting the reverse side for correct hallmarks and assessing the crispness of the underlying guilloche engraving helps verify age and craftsmanship.

An enamel brooch can be fastened to a tailored coat lapel, secured onto a silk scarf, or pinned onto a high-necked knit sweater. Collecting multiple insect or floral brooches to group together on a blazer lapel creates a curated, contemporary look.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a dedicated silver polishing cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or ultrasonic cleaners that may damage fine enamel. Store the piece flat in a padded jewellery box away from humidity and direct sunlight to prevent tarnish and oxidisation.
