Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Zanzibar chests originated along the Swahili coast as major trade items throughout the Indian Ocean network during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were primarily crafted using tropical hardwoods and decorated with brass metalwork brought by traders from India and the Arabian Peninsula.

These trunks were constructed using dense hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or mahogany to withstand maritime transit. The exterior decoration relies heavily on solid brass sheeting, hand-cut brass plates, and brass studding affixed with iron or brass nails.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature dense, heavy hardwood construction, hand-hammered brass studs with slight irregularities, and original brass corner brackets. Signs of age include natural oxidation on the metalwork and hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery.

A Zanzibar chest serves as a functional focal point when placed at the foot of a bed, positioned as a central coffee table in a living room, or used as statement storage in an entryway.

Maintain the hardwood by applying a natural beeswax polish along the grain annually. Clean the brass studs gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can damage the wood surround or strip the historic patina.
