A Pair of Royal Doulton Stoneware Vases by Bessie Newbery - 7903

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb pair of Royal Doulton stoneware vases in mint condition, measuring 21cm (8.25 inches) tall. Believed to be a design by Harry Simeon, these striking vases feature bold Art Deco geometric panels near the neck—stylistic details that suggest a production date in the 1920s. This timeframe also aligns with the final years of Bessie Newbery’s remarkable 40+ year career at Doulton, making these a particularly special example of her work.

Each vase bears the impressed Royal Doulton mark with crown and lion, along with the series number 7903. Both pieces are monogram-signed by Bessie Newbery.

Together, the pair remains in immaculate condition—free from chips, cracks, crazing, restoration, or any notable wear. A wonderfully decorative and collectable duo.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Royal Doulton Arts and Crafts stoneware is defined by hand-applied slip, incised patterns, and organic or geometric motifs developed at the Lambeth studio during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artisans executed distinct glazed finishes and stylised floral designs, making each piece unique.

Doulton stoneware was made from durable, high-fired stoneware clay decorated with mineral oxides, cobalt glazes, and salt-glazing techniques. Artists applied reactive mottling and contrasting matt or gloss glazes to highlight incised and tubelined detailing.

Authentic pieces carry impressed factory backmarks, shape or pattern numbers, and specific artist monograms or initials stamped or incised into the base. The weight, dense stoneware body, and quality of hand-applied glazes also serve as key indicators.

Position a pair of stoneware vases symmetrically on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish structure and visual balance. The earthy tones and textural glazes pair effectively with dark wood, neutral plaster walls, or stone surfaces.

Clean stoneware by dusting with a soft cloth or washing gently in warm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid submerging unglazed areas for prolonged periods and never place antique ceramics in a dishwasher.
