Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, where a sheet of copper was fused between two thinner sheets of sterling silver before being rolled into sheets. This technique was used extensively until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

Meat domes were crafted by hand-hammering fused silver and copper sheets into curved shapes, often adding cast silver handles and gadrooned borders. Higher-grade silver shields were frequently let into the body to allow for armorial engravings without exposing the underlying copper.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-hammering on the interior, a characteristic warm tone, and occasionally bleeding where the underlying copper shows through worn silver highlights along edges or borders.

Large silver meat domes are commonly displayed on a dining room sideboard, mounted on wall displays as reflective focal points, or used as central decorative accents on large dining tables.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver foam or polish designed for plated items. Avoid aggressive rubbing or harsh chemicals, as excessive abrasive cleaning can wear away the top layer of silver and expose the base copper.
