Stevenson & Hancock, Derby, Toby Jug “snuff Taker”, C.1862
£300 $405 €344
Miniature porcelain Toby Jug from Stevenson & Hancock, Derby, King Street, c.1862. The figure is modelled as a traditional English “snuff taker”, hand painted with bright enamels and wearing a top hat (removable cover, present with chip to rim). The base bears the rare King Street Derby mark: crown, crossed swords, D, S and N. This type of jug represents a beloved English folk character, long considered a symbol of national humour, sociability, and the everyday spirit of Victorian Britain. Toby Jugs like this became iconic in English tavern culture and remain favorites among collectors for their charm and wit. These snuff taker Toby Jugs are an important part of Derby’s ceramic tradition and are valued for their rarity, craftsmanship, and historical associations. Surviving examples with the original hat cover and clear period mark are increasingly difficult to find.
Dimensions: height 11 cm, width 7 cm, d...epth 7 cm.
Condition: chip to rim of cover, otherwise excellent.
Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance.
