Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
A contrasting river landscape is painted on the reverse. The lid and shoulder area are covered with dense kinran-de style gilding. The glaze is cream-toned with a uniform crackle typical of early Kyoto Satsuma. The detailed brushwork and controlled use of gold suggest the hand of an accomplished Kyoto artist, possibly working in the circle of Shozan. The original signature may have been obscured for export. Such teapots were often produced in small numbers for international exhibitions and private collectors.
Condition: the spout has been professionally reattached; otherwise excellent. All original gilding and enamel remain intact. The original hardwood stand is included.
