Auto-opening Petal Leaf Table – Rare and Interesting - c1880

The piece offers great interest with a round upper surface nicely presented showing rosewood inlay and marquetry featuring a flower design.
As the top of the table is rotated the petals are smoothly revealed as they fan outwards from north, south, east and west. After one half of a turn all four are fully extended and produce the gorgeous ‘flower in bloom’ effect. Suitable for display or storage purposes the compartments are nicely lined with padded and buttoned silk.

To retract the storage compartments simply turn the table top in the opposite direction and they smoothly lock back in to place.
Below the upper section sits a lower tier offering opportunity as a pot stand. This sits over the unifying stretcher which joins the swept tapering square section legs. The lower tier features pleasing marquetry and the legs and stretchers are detailed with light stringing inlay.

Overall an exciting item to own and one to bring a smile. The table is in solid order throughout but does have an old professional repair to the upper surface (see images) and the expected marks of age – certainly nothing unexpected or which would detract from the piece. It is presented in good clean antique condition ready to use.
