Early 19th Century Staffordshire Pearlware Loving Cup, Chinoiserie, C.1820

19th century
Description

An early 19th-century Staffordshire pearlware loving cup, circa 1820, of cylindrical form with two loop handles. Decorated with chinoiserie scenes in puce transfer-print, further enhanced with hand-applied enamels and gilding over a deep cobalt blue ground. The glaze displays a characteristic bluish tone and fine surface crazing, confirming its classification as pearlware. The cobalt ground shows an incomplete application near the footrim, with pooling and visible drips — a known feature of hand-finished decoration on Staffordshire pearlware of this period. In this instance, the irregular application adds to the uniqueness of the piece — no identical example is known to exist. It is a highly distinctive and desirable item for collectors of early English ceramics. Although similar mugs are often misidentified online as "Gaudy Welsh", this attribution does not apply here. The use of chinoiserie transfer-print and cobalt glaze firmly situates this object within the Staffordshire tradition, whereas true Gaudy Welsh wares feature freehand floral painting and a very different palette.

Condition:

A section of the rim has been restored; overpainting is visible upon inspection. Otherwise in excellent antique condition with no structural damage and strong retention of decoration.

Dimensions:

Height: 11 cm

Width: 19 cm

Base diameter: 11.3 cm

Weight: 442 g
