Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate was invented in the mid-18th century by Thomas Boulsover, who discovered that copper and silver could be fused together through heat and pressure. This technique allowed silversmiths to produce items that resembled solid silver at a fraction of the weight and cost prior to the invention of electroplating in the 1840s.

These pieces were produced by sandwiching a thick ingot of copper between two thinner sheets of sterling silver. The fused metal was rolled into sheets, worked into shape by hand-hammering or stamping, and finished with applied die-struck silver borders to conceal the underlying copper core.

Authentic items often feature visible red copper showing through high points where silver has worn away, known as bleed-through. They also lack modern electroplating hallmarks, frequently displaying stamped makers marks or pseudo-hallmarks alongside hand-soldered rims and turned edges.

An antique silver knife tray functions well on a hallway console or office desk as a catch-all dish for keys, stationery, or letters. Its elongated profile also renders it suitable as a central decorative dish on a dining table or sideboard.

Wash the surface gently using warm water and mild dish detergent, drying thoroughly with a soft cloth immediately after. Avoid harsh chemical polishes and abrasive pastes that can strip the thin outer silver layer and expose the underlying copper base.
