A very Rare High Back Windsor Chairin Yew wood with an Elm Seat Probably by John and Elizabeth Gabbitass a prominant Chair Maker of Worksop Nottinghamshire. This chair has all the hallmarks of the gabbitass tradition of highest quality Windsor CHairs in addition it has turned and shaped rear crinoline stretcher supports something i have never seen before. the leg turnings and splat piercings are the best. a super chair in Excellent condition, it has a very pleasing colour and patina and has only been waxed prior to selling

Originating in the 18th century, Windsor chairs became a staple of English regional furniture, characterised by solid wooden seats into which the back spindles and legs are socketed.

Windsor chairs were constructed using native timbers, predominantly ash for steam-bent back bows, elm for the shaped seats, and yew wood or fruitwood for turned legs and spindles.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display distinctive rich grain patterns characteristic of yew wood, hand-turned spindles, wedged-tenon joinery, and occasionally maker marks stamped into the seat edge.

To preserve yew wood, position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, and apply natural beeswax regularly to protect the original patinated surface.
