Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to items made by fusing a layer of silver onto copper ingots before crafting the vessel, a technique invented in the 18th century. A loving cup is a traditional two-handled drinking vessel historically used for toasts at formal gatherings and ceremonies.

It was manufactured by thermally bonding copper between sheets of sterling silver and rolling the metal into sheets. Craftspeople then hand-hammered and raised these fused sheets into decorative objects, often featuring inlaid silver wire or silver foil cartouches for engraving.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit copper showing through worn silver areas, known as bleeding, alongside visible seams from hand construction and inset silver shields for monograms. They typically lack electroplate hallmarks, pre-dating the commercial electroplating process patented in 1840.

An antique loving cup serves as a decorative focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf. It can also be repurposed on an office desk as a stationery holder or styled as a vessel for dried floral arrangements on a dining table.

Clean gently with a soft cotton cloth and mild silver polish specifically formulated for historic silver plate to protect the thin silver surface. Avoid aggressive chemical dips or abrasive scrubbing, which can permanently strip the outer silver layer and expose the underlying copper core.
