Welsh Coffor Bach On Turned Feet 1720-50

£2,200    $2,980    €2,592
A charming Welsh coffor bach of appealingly restrained form. Made almost entirely from single planks of boldly figured Welsh oak, the beautifully patinated front is especially striking and edged by an applied D moulding. The drawer retains its oak and pine linings and sits above a well-splayed base moulding and a complete set of ball-turned feet. The two brass lid hinges are clearly not original. the handles are Optimum Brass replacements, perfectly matching the original escutcheons.

Welsh, probably Glamorganshire/Monmouthshire, circa 1720-1750.

Traditionally associated with marriage, these miniature versions of larger coffers would have been used to store a woman`s most precious, small possessions and were often passed down through the female line in Welsh families.

The underside of the lid has a type-written label from J Kyrle-Fletcher Ltd, 79 High Street, Newport, Monmouthshire, a BADA antiques dealer who traded at this address between 1912 and 1966.
