An Outstanding Mid Victorian Silver & Glass Claret Jug

An outstanding silver mounted claret jug dating from the mid-Victorian era. The hallmarked silver mount is fully cast and features repousse flower panels and a large oval vacant cartouche. The serpentine handle sweeps downwards towards the base with a 'kick' at the end and features acanthis leaves to the top and bottom. To the rear is a pierced silver panel, supporting the handle and the pouring lip is engraved with leaves and reeds.

The lid has a beaded border, repeated on the collar, a pierced thumb-grip and a gorgeous armorial of a rampant lion. The glass body is baluster in shape and features an etched diamond and floral pattern and the raised foot has a polished pontil mark. A superior piece, both practical and decorative.
