Officer of the British Army personal purchase of this fine engraved bladed 1796 pattern sabre, the blade has become tarnished and the leather scabbard shows its age the stitching has decayed overtime, the blade would restore as no rust showing on this beautiful engraved blade, Famed for its use by Britain’s Light Dragoons and Hussars during the Peninsular War and Waterloo, this sword was also supplied to the Prussian Cavalry in great numbers and even found favour in the USA.

This design was suggested for British service by cavalry officer John Gaspard Le Marchant, who believed cavalry swords should be light and have a curved, slashing blade. Designed by John Gaspard Le Marchant and manufactured by British cutlers, the 1796 pattern light cavalry sabre was adopted by the British army during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Its blade design was inspired by Central European hussar weapons to optimize slashing efficiency from horseback.

The blade was forged from high-carbon steel, fitted into a steel or brass stirrup hilt with a wood-core grip wrapped in leather and wire. Scabbards were constructed using wood covered in leather with iron or brass mounts, or entirely from sheet steel for enlisted troops.

Authentic period sabres display distinct blade profile widening near the point, inspection stamps near the ricasso, maker marks along the spine, and natural age patination or minor surface oxidisation consistent with late 18th-century steel forging.

Militaria items function well as focal accent pieces when mounted horizontally above a mantelpiece, positioned within a custom glass display case inside a study, or hung on a accent wall in a traditional library setting.

Apply a microcrystalline wax or light coat of acid-free mineral oil to metal surfaces to prevent rust, avoiding skin contact with bare metal. Store leather components in a climate-controlled room with stable humidity to prevent drying or cracking.
