Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Japanning originated in seventeenth-century Europe as an imitation of East Asian lacquerware technique. Artisans applied shellac and spirit varnishes over timber, decorating the surface with hand-painted Chinoiserie landscapes, figures, and botanical motifs. The technique remained popular through the eighteenth century and experienced significant revivals in the early twentieth century.

Traditional japanned furniture consists of a wooden substrate, often pine or oak, covered in built-up layers of gesso and pigmented varnish or lacquer. The surface motifs were applied using metallic powders, gold leaf, and mineral paints, with cast brass handles and escutcheons fitted to the drawers.

Twentieth-century revival pieces typically feature dovetailed drawer construction, machine-cut or partially hand-finished timber, and fine craquelure across the varnish layer. Authentic age presents gentle surface wear around handles, soft oxidation to the brass hardware, and subtle fading to the hand-painted pigments.

A japanned chest of drawers functions as an accent piece in hallways, living areas, or bedrooms. Positioning the chest against neutral backdrop walls allows the detailed hand-painted figurative scenes and light cream palette to provide visual contrast.

Preservation requires dusting with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and avoiding commercial spray polishes or water. Keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and maintaining stable room humidity prevents the lacquer layers from cracking, lifting, or discolouring over time.
