Meissen Porcelain Box with Black Dragon Motif, Early 20th Century

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely crafted lidded porcelain box by Meissen, dating from the early 20th century. The domed lid is decorated with a rare black enamel depiction of a five-clawed imperial dragon chasing the flaming pearl, surrounded by stylized red clouds. The decoration continues on the lower part of the box. This piece belongs to Meissen’s celebrated “Chinesischer Drache” series, inspired by Chinese imperial iconography and developed into one of the factory’s most recognizable patterns. The so-called “Black Ming Dragon” version is among the least common and most collectible variants of the design, typically produced in red or green. The box is marked underneath with the blue crossed swords of Meissen, with a red decorator’s number to the interior. The quality of painting and gilding demonstrates the factory’s technical excellence and long-standing tradition of skilled hand decoration.

Condition:

Excellent condition with one tiny chip (1 mm) to the inner rim of the lid. No other defects or repairs. The decoration remains crisp, and the gilding is intact.

Dimensions:

Height: 5.5 cm

Diameter: 9.3 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The dragon pattern originated at the Meissen manufactory in the early eighteenth century, inspired by Chinese imperial porcelain designs and adapted for European aristocracy.

These pieces were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, painted by hand with mineral-based enamels, and finished with gilded rims or accents.

Look for the hand-painted blue crossed swords mark under the glaze on the base, along with incised or impressed factory numbers and consistent painting quality.

Display the box individually on a sideboard top, curated within a shelf arrangement, or placed on a vanity tray to store small items.

Wipe gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid abrasive cleansers or soaking in water, as heat and moisture can degrade delicate gilding.
