Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Bokhara Suzani Embroidery to the 1850s.
There is a very subtle range of colours with a varied array of flowers, and the design flows elegantly through the field, linked by gold tendrils and leaves in shades of green and blue. The embroiderer even managed to include one or two little additional floral elements, if one looks carefully. The field composition is framed by an equally elegant border with larger scale floral ornaments and a wonderful flowing green leafy arabesque which runs around the entire composition. If there was ever a suzani that was made as a dowry piece this would surely be it. Cherished throughout the generations, it has survived in excellent condition and with no visible staining. As an added bonus, it has three different pieces of old chintz lining on the back. Totally charismatic, this suzani is both highly collectible and decorative.
