Pair of French Porcelain Figures by Bloch & Sie, Paris, C. 1887–1900

19th century
Description

An attractive and well-executed pair of antique French porcelain figures, representing a male and female musician, produced by Bloch & Sie in Paris. Each figure is mounted on a Rococo-style porcelain base with moulded scrolls and floral decoration, hand-painted and enriched with gilding. The male figure depicts a drummer; one of the drumsticks is missing and the other broken. The female figure holds a harp with replaced strings. Both figures display finely painted faces and remain visually impressive. These works are representative of the Rococo revival style popular in late 19th-century France. The male figure bears the underglaze blue crossed-line mark on the reverse, while the female figure is marked underneath the base - the registered factory mark of Bloch & Sie, Paris. Bloch & Sie were among the leading Parisian porcelain manufacturers of their time, known for their elegant interpretations of 18th-century forms and their high standard of decoration. Their pieces are now highly regarded by collectors of Belle Époque decorative arts. From a gentleman’s collection. A rare and desirable pair for collectors of 19th-century French porcelain.

Condition: one drumstick missing, the other broken; replaced harp strings; minor flower losses. No restorations. Overall excellent antique condition.

Dimensions: Male – height 27 cm, weight 991 g Female – height 27 cm, weight 621 g
