Papier-mache furniture gained widespread popularity during the mid-19th century in Britain, driven by manufacturers such as Jennens & Bettridge. The technique allowed craftsmen to produce decorative household items and light furniture featuring intricate lacquer work, mother-of-pearl inlays, and gilded ornamentation.

Pieces were constructed using layers of paper pulp or laminated paper sheets pressed with adhesives, then baked and treated with asphaltum varnish or black lacquer. Decoration involved hand-painted botanical artwork, gold leaf scrollwork, and embedded slivers of iridescent mother-of-pearl.
