Forget-me-not Gourd-form Porcelain Scent Bottle, Meissen or Dresden, C.1850

19th century
Description

A highly decorative porcelain scent bottle in the shape of a gourd, finely modelled with applied forget-me-not flowers and hand-painted insects. The glaze shows soft craquelure typical of Meissen and Dresden production around 1850. Visual analysis using AI-supported tools indicates with high confidence (90%) an attribution to Meissen. A secondary possibility (10%) exists for a Dresden workshop such as Carl Thieme (Potschappel), Richard Klemm, or Donath. The base bears a hand-painted mark “SPF”, applied over a visibly erased original factory mark - most likely Meissen. This was a known 19th-century practice when items changed hands through dealers or were prepared for resale abroad. This scent bottle is highly collectible, combining technical finesse, period charm, and historical intrigue.

Condition:

Neck reattached with a visible exterior crack. Small chip to the stopper. Some flower losses. One area of the lower body shows enamel loss and chipping to the applied decoration, exposing the underlying ceramic. This is consistent with age and fragility of such fine applied work .Otherwise good antique condition.

Dimensions:

Height 18 cm

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

German porcelain scent bottles gained widespread popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, produced by renowned manufactories such as Meissen and regional Dresden workshops. These small containers were crafted to hold concentrated liquid perfumes, often featuring elaborate Rococo revival moulding, delicate encrusted flowers, and hand-painted miniature details.

These scent bottles were constructed from hard-paste porcelain cast in specialized moulds or hand-modelled into naturalistic forms. Craftspeople shaped minute petals, leaves, and stems individually by hand before firing, then applied poly-chrome enamel glazes, crackle effects, and gilt details in subsequent kiln firings.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit fine hard-paste porcelain bodies, crisp high-relief floral work, and precise hand-painted enamelling. Look for factory marks under the glaze on the base, such as crossed swords or painter numbers, as well as period-appropriate brass, gold, or silver collar mounts.

A delicate scent bottle works best as a detailed accent on a dressing table, bedside stand, or curated display cabinet. Grouping small ceramic objects together on a mirrored tray creates an elegant vignette that highlights their intricate sculptural forms.

Clean delicate porcelain encrusted with raised flowers using a soft camel-hair brush or dry makeup brush to gently dislodge dust without risking breakage. Avoid immersing the bottle in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as water can weaken old repairs or damage metal mounts and stoppers.
