Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gu-shaped vase is a flared cylindrical vessel form based on ancient Chinese bronze wine goblets from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, ceramicists adapted this traditional shape into porcelain, producing flared beaker vases decorated with underglaze cobalt paint.

These pieces were crafted from kaolin clay and petuntse (china stone), formed on a wheel, and decorated with ground cobalt oxide pigment. The vessel was then covered in a clear glaze and fired at high temperatures in a kiln, fusing the glaze and setting the rich blue underglaze decoration.

Authentic pieces feature crisp, bright cobalt blue tones layered to create depth, smooth white glazes with minimal imperfections, and precise hand painting. Later 19th-century pieces often emulate 17th-century Kangxi motifs, displaying characteristic foot rims, potting lines, and subtle wear to the base.

A Gu-shaped beaker vase functions well as a focal accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a bookshelf arrangement. Its tall, slender silhouette balances symmetrical console displays and pairs effortlessly with Chinoiserie textiles or contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush around detailed areas. If cleaning is required, wash gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive sponges or chemical cleaners that could damage unglazed areas or foot rims.
