Paul Sieffert Oil Painting

1920 - 1940
Description

PAUL SIEFFERT ( 1874 – 1957 ) Oil on canvas

A superb large signed oil on canvas by the French painter of nudes, Paul Sieffert. The work is signed lower right and unlined on its original canvas and is numbered 736 verso in the artist’s oeuvre of work. A beautiful example of the painter’s work. This particular posture, being his most valued and sought-after paintings, A recent very similar painting from the same series and posture sold in June 2024 Germany for 15,000 euros hammer + 30% BP. (last Image)

The painting is a delicate back view of a beautiful woman, lying on a light fur rug, in front of a faun wall. The woman draws her legs and back forward and rests her head on her arm. Sieffert was a figure and nude painter who learned painting in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). His paintings are characterised by their delicate colour palette, precise depiction of anatomy, and the uniformity of his subjects. He became a prolific nude painter in his later years. Numbered his works. The similar painting that sold in 2024 was pastel under glass number 180. (Last Image) Ours is oil on canvas, number 736.

Portrait and nude painter, student of Gérôme. He received the Rome Prize in 1902. Paintings by him are in several important collections and public museums. (14014815) (19)

Paul Sieffert was a pupil of Jean Léon Gérôme, Gabriel Guay and Albert Maignan. In 1902 he won the first Grand Prix de Rome. In 1931 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur and in 1937 he received the Diplôme d’honneur for the Exposition Internationale. He exhibited in Paris, mainly at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was a member from 1894. He was also a member of the committee and the jury. Although he created some decorative works, cartoons for stained glass, illustrations for books, and even, in his youth, several very Realist subjects ( Dockers, Drunken Slave) the latter part of his career was devoted to an inexhaustible output of nudes.
