Antique Gold Egg Pendant Necklace with Ruby and Sapphire – Russian School, c.1880–1900
A fine antique gold pendant necklace, probably of Russian origin, dating from the late 19th century. The small egg-shaped pendant is set with two cabochon stones — one pinkish-red, likely a natural ruby, and the other a cornflower-blue stone, probably a natural sapphire — each neatly mounted in finely worked rope-twist surrounds. The top is finished with a beaded collar and integral soldered suspension loop.
The pendant is of rich yellow tone and appears to be 18ct gold. Though unmarked, its quality and design are consistent with the Russian school, particularly jewellers working in Moscow or St Petersburg around 1880–1900, and forms part of a tradition of fine miniature gold egg jewellery produced outside the Fabergé workshops.
It is suspended from a fine antique trace-link chain, probably English or continental in origin. The chain is likely 9ct gold, with all links individually soldered a
...nd bearing minute marks visible under magnification. A rubbed hallmark is also present to the clasp link. The chain fastens with a spring-ring clasp.
A small and well-crafted antique jewel of understated charm, from a collection that included other Russian pieces of the period.
