Georgian Embroidery with Painted Paper Faces

19th century
Description

Antique Georgian wool embroidered picture with painted silk sky of a mother and child beneath a tree with faces and body painted on paper, very finely undertaken. There are also two other faces on the floor which are finely painted. These could possibly be depicting Janus, when researched it can symbolise death but also moving on in life & rebirth and change so possibly a transition from the child to becoming an older child or possibly just two death masks of a child and father I cannot be certain.

The hair has been finely drawn and the embroidery has been well executed

There are some paint losses on the paper and a few very small insect holes in the wool areas. They are old holes, however, I did put the complete frame/picture in a bag with natural non invasive non chemical moth balls as an extra measure

Unusual embroidery with paper insertions in old verre eglomise frame old glass with air bubbles

Overall dimensions

46.5 cm x 34.7 x 2 cm

Some slight wear & losses to the frame

The back appears to be original although tired and the backing board split

I ship worldwide, please contact me for a postage quote or for further details , All items will be well packed and I Re- use packaging wherever possible

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian silk embroidery pictures are fine decorative textiles created primarily during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often executed by hand using silk threads on woven backings.

These works typically utilise silk threads embroidered onto silk satin or linen grounds, frequently incorporating painted paper or watercolour details for human features.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-stitched silk threads with mild natural fading, period-correct paper or silk elements for painted details, and period glass mounts.

Position framed textile art above a console or alongside traditional oil paintings on a gallery wall to introduce textural variety and historic character.

Keep textile artwork out of direct sunlight and humid environments, maintaining stable temperatures and framing under protective glass.
