Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped via the port of Imari, predominantly characterised by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gold decoration.

Imari pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay, painted with underglaze cobalt blue before high-temperature firing, and subsequently decorated with overglaze enamels and gilding at a lower temperature.

Authentic Imari exhibits spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, minor imperfections in the glaze, rich iron-red and underglaze cobalt tones, and fine hand-painted detailing.

An Imari plate can be displayed on a plate stand upon a dark wood sideboard, wall-mounted within a gallery arrangement, or placed flat on a console table as a catchall.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, or dishwashers to protect the overglaze enamels and gilding.
