Description

A fine Satsuma small porcelain vase from Kyoto, Meiji period, circa 1890. The vase is of small ovoid form with a narrow neck and slightly flared rim. It is decorated in overglaze enamels and raised gold on an ivory-toned crackled glaze, typical of Kyoto Satsuma production.

The surface depicts a serene landscape with a cherry tree in bloom, a tiered pagoda, thatched-roof houses, and a flowing stream. In the distance, Mount Fuji rises along the horizon — a classic symbol of Japan often included in export wares of the period to evoke cultural identity and harmony. The upper neck is framed with a geometric border in red and gold. The underside bears a rectangular red and gold cartouche reading Heian (??), referencing Kyoto’s classical name and indicating the origin from a Kyoto-based workshop during the late 19th century.

This is a fine and well-preserved example of Kyoto Satsuma porcelain, notable for its small scale, hand-painted details, and symbolic composition.

Condition: excellent antique condition. Slight wear to gilding only. No damage or restoration. Please note: the wooden stand visible in photographs is not included in the sale.
