Large Porcelain Tray by Samson, Paris, Bleu Céleste, Watteau Scene, C.1880

19th century
Description

A large French porcelain tray, attributed to the workshop of Edmé Samson, Paris, circa 1880 — a rare example showing characteristics occasionally found in other high-quality Parisian ateliers of the period. The tray is decorated in the style of Sèvres, featuring a finely painted central pastoral scene after Watteau, framed by floral cartouches and set against a matte turquoise enamel ground (bleu céleste) with extensive gilt scrollwork. The underside bears an underglaze blue interlaced “L” mark imitating that of the Sèvres manufactory. While Samson is most commonly associated with glossy glazes, rare examples with softened or satin finishes are known, particularly in works emulating 18th-century royal models.(See: Catherine Bourgeois, Samson: Imiter pour mieux servir l’art, Éditions Faton, 2002).

Condition and Dimensions:

Length 29.5 cm, width 23.5 cm, height 5 cm. Weight: 713 g.

A long crack on the reverse has been professionally restored and is only faintly visible from the front. Minor rubbing to gilding. Otherwise in very good condition.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in Paris in the 19th century by Edme Samson, the Samson manufactory specialized in reproducing historic porcelain styles from major European and Asian factories, including 18th-century Sevres and Meissen designs.

These items were typically crafted from hard-paste porcelain, painted by hand using mineral enamel pigments, and finished with burnished gold leaf gilding over distinct background colours such as bleu celeste.

Authentic pieces feature hard-paste ceramic bodies, detailed overglaze enamel painting, precise gilded borders, and often carry Samson factory marks, which sometimes imitate historic maker marks.

A porcelain tray can be displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard, placed flat on a console table as a catchall, or mounted securely as part of a wall gallery.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or immersion, which can damage surface gilding and enamel artwork.
