Description

Superb pair of framed oil paintings on canvas by the German artist Max Usadel (1880 - 1959) dated 1922. Entitled Summer in Oria - Lake Lugano and Autumn in Casserate - Lake Lugano. Both are lake shore scenes depicting houses and gardens with figures and 'Lucia' rowing boats, traditional to the Italian lakes, with their distinctive hooped frame to support a canvas cover to protect fishermen and passengers from the elements. Whilst the boat men are busy in the summer, autumn sees a boat tied up and its owner sitting idly in the prow whilst women wash clothes at the lake edge. Beautifully painted in vivid colours with lovely light effects in the sky and water. Both signed and dated 1922. Presented in their original moulded and gilded gesso frames with the title and artist's name on the slip. Some minor damage to the frames, but both canvases are in excellent condition.
