Antique Tubreh, Kordi Tribes of Darreh Gaz, Khorassan Province, North-east Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare and stunning small storage-bag or 'tubreh' made by a weaver who belonged to the Kordi tribes of Darreh Gaz in Khorassan Province, north-eastern Persia, circa 1900.

The face is woven in weft-wrapping technique using the most fabulous, glossy, vegetable-dye wool which literally sings, and the back in narrow-coloured bands of plain-weave.

Today, these bags are extremely rare and I was lucky to receive it from a friend in Khorassan very recently, before the Israeli strikes and lockdown of shipping facilities in Iran.

A very collectable bag.

Size: 46cm x 30cm (1' 6" x 1' 0").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Tubreh is a small woven storage bag traditionally made and used by nomadic Kordi tribes in the Khorassan Province of North-East Persia for transporting personal belongings and provisions.

Kordi tribal bags are hand-woven using locally sourced, hand-spun wool coloured with natural plant dyes, incorporating flatweave, extra-weft floating, and knotted pile techniques.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool yarns, natural colour variations known as abrash, irregular hand-knotted geometry, and traditional selvedge finishings along the edges.

These compact woven textiles are typically mounted and framed as wall art, draped over small tables, or placed on display stands to add colour and texture to modern schemes.

Store and display the textile away from direct sunlight to avoid dye fading, vacuum gently without a rotary brush, and seek specialist conservation cleaning when necessary.
