Fowey River Antiques has dated this piece to the 1960s.
This is a very rare all original Tropical Black Gilt dial version of the 8531 with inboard date and water resistant case.
The legendary IWC in house calibre 8541 fully automatic Chronometer grade movement is regarded as one of the finest automatics ever made and known as the "watchmakers watch" as you can see is in superb condition.
The dial is totally original and has aged to perfection with a superb gilt starry sky patina.
The case has never been polished all we have done is service the movement and ultrasonically clean the case.
The attention to detail is whats make these IWC watches stand out from other manufacturers. The movement has Pelaton automatic winding the most effecient type of winding system but very expensive to make.
The minute markers are small polished gilt circles that are individually machined into the surface of the dial, everyone else like Rolex and Omega just used printed minute markers.
The seconds hand is domed along its whole length meaning that from any angle the light reflects along its centre line, these are very difficult to make, everyone else just used standard flat topped seconds hands
It has an armoured glass and the IWC fish symbol on the crown.
The water resistant versions of the 8541 are exceedingly rare add to this the original black tropical dial and you are very unlikely to ever see another.
As you would expect the watch is fully marked on the dial, movement and case.
The watch case measures 34mm in diameter not including the crown.
It can be supplied with a leather strap or military webbing strap of any colour or style you prefer, we can also fit a mesh bracelet if you prefer.
The watch has just been fully serviced and comes with a one year warranty.
