Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Military campaign chests were developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for British military officers travelling to foreign stations. Designed to be portable yet durable, these pieces featured modular construction that allowed them to be split into two manageable sections for transport via pack animals or ships.

These chests were typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany or teak, chosen for their resistance to warping and insect damage. Construction elements include recessed brass handles, corner brackets, and strapwork designed flush with the wood surface to prevent snagging during movement.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct two-part structure, flush brass carry handles on the sides of each section, flush drawer pulls, and protective corner mounts. Evidence of hand-cut dovetail joints, original screw configurations, and historic wear around the join line confirm nineteenth-century manufacture.

A military chest functions effectively as a focal storage piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Complementing both traditional dark wood schemes and modern minimalist interiors, its clean geometric profile pairs well with warm leather tones, architectural lighting, and natural textiles.

Dust the timber regularly using a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax twice yearly along the grain. Brass fittings should generally be left unpolished to preserve historical oxidisation, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that may strip the original surface finish of the surrounding wood.
