Georgian Mahogany Whatnot, Possibly Gillows.

18th century
Description

A Georgian mahogany three tier whatnot, the adjustable rising top with detachable bookrest, above a single drawer with dovetailed linings, turned uprights either side of the two bottom trays terminating in bold brass castors. There is a fitted ink drawer that slides out and forward so the top can also be used to write on. Fine quality timber and a great design which leads us to think it could possibly be by Gillows of Lancaster. In excellent original condition throughout. English Circa 1825.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A whatnot, popularised during the late Georgian and Regency periods, is a tiered piece of open furniture designed to hold books, curiosities, or sheet music.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was predominantly used, combined with hand-turned column supports, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planed timber, original brass castors with steel screws, hand-cut joinery on drawers, and natural patination across turned supports.

Position the piece in a study, library, or drawing room to display art books, ceramics, or indoor plants alongside modern light fixtures.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain twice annually, avoiding direct sunlight and heat.
