Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ormolu curtain tiebacks, historically referred to as embrasses, are decorative gilt-metal wall fixtures designed to hold drapes away from window frames. Popular in 18th and 19th-century French interiors, these pieces combine functional drape support with elaborate casting and architectural ornament.

High-end 19th-century holdbacks were typically cast in bronze or brass using sand or lost-wax casting methods. The metal was then finished with ormolu, a mercury-gilding process that bonded fine gold to the surface to create a luminous, lasting finish.

Authentic pieces exhibit crisp hand-chased relief work, substantial physical weight, and subtle surface variation from historic casting methods. Natural age manifest as soft wear to the high points and dark oxidisation within deep relief areas, alongside original threaded mounting bars.

These gilded accents can be paired with plain linen or modern velvet drapery to introduce historic contrast to clean-lined rooms. Alternatively, they can be mounted independently as decorative wall hooks for hanging tassels, tapestries, or light accessories.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or clean microfibre cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid liquid metal polishes, solvent cleaners, and abrasive materials, which permanently strip historic mercury gilding.
