Early 1900'S Carved Folk Art Style Milliner's Head

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a delightfully carved wooden head of a woman believed to be continental and dating probably to the first quarter of the 20th century.

Her severe countenance is masterfully sketched out with only a few features, resembling the same sharp expressiveness of folk-art sculptures.

Good rich patina that comes from years of waxing.

In very good order. Slight wear consistent with age and use and with no obvious signs of damages.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Milliners heads were carved wooden forms utilized by hatmakers in the 19th and early 20th centuries to shape, block, and present bespoke headwear during construction.

These forms were typically crafted from solid hardwoods such as beech, oak, or fruitwood, which provided a stable structure capable of withstanding steam and pinning during hatmaking.

Authentic period examples feature hand-tool carving marks, natural timber shrinkage over time, surface patination, and minor pin marks or smoothed areas from functional use.

A carved millinery form functions as a standalone sculptural object on a bookshelf, sideboard top, or console alongside contemporary art, ceramics, and structured greenery.

Keep the wood away from direct heat and fluctuating humidity to prevent splitting, dusting gently with a microfibre cloth and applying clear microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the finish.
