Royal Worcester Porcelain Figure of Aphrodite, Dated 1867, Sea-green Robe

19th century
Description

A highly refined and exceptionally rare Royal Worcester porcelain figure, dated 1867. It depicts Aphrodite leaning gracefully against a classical column, holding two gilded pipes and standing on an oval claret base enriched with additional gilding. The figure is finely modelled, with elegant folds of drapery and an expressive face that attest to the outstanding quality of early Worcester sculpture.

The model is based on a Roman copy of a 5th-century BC Greek original by Alcamenes, known as Aphrodite of the Gardens — now housed in the Louvre. This figure reflects the neoclassical tastes of the Victorian era and is believed to be among the earliest sculptural works created by Royal Worcester, prior to the celebrated output of James Hadley and Fred Gertner. Its rarity is underscored by the fact that no catalogue record or direct comparison has been found. It departs from the factory’s typical production in both theme and style. We would gratefully welcome any scholarly input or archival references regarding similar examples. This is a museum-grade piece — notable for its early date, neoclassical inspiration, and extraordinary preservation — and would make a superb addition to any advanced collection of 19th-century English porcelain.

Condition: the right hand has been professionally restored and is only visible under UV light. No other damage or restoration. Outstanding antique condition overall.

Dimensions: height 29.5 cm, width 13 cm, depth 9 cm, weight 1059 g
