French Rococo style lighting emerged in the early eighteenth century during the reign of Louis XV. It is defined by organic, fluid forms including asymmetrical scrollwork, foliage, acanthus leaves, and shell motifs, executed primarily in cast metals.

Traditional French wall sconces were typically cast from brass or bronze (ormolu) using the lost-wax or sand-casting method. The metal surface was then chased by hand and fire-gilded or lacquered to achieve a golden finish.
