Georgian Staffordshire Lovick’s Pattern Blue & White Serving Plate C1830

Description

This beautiful GEORGIAN STAFFORDSHIRE BLUE AND WHITE SERVING PLATE dates from circa 1830.

Although unmarked and the Maker is unknown, the PATTERN is referred to as LOVICK’S. It was named after the Norwich Retailer whose mark has been found on pieces in this Pattern.

The design is bold and well balanced with a large vase of blousy flowers to the right and an exotic bird in a branch to the left, all within a floral and scroll border.

The PLATE is in good condition with no restoration.

Georgian Staffordshire transferware refers to earthenware ceramics produced in Staffordshire, England, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries using an underglaze copper-plate printing technique.

These platters were made from white earthenware clay decorated with cobalt blue oxide ink transferred from engraved copper plates, sealed with a transparent lead glaze, and fired in kilns.

Authentic pieces exhibit underglaze cobalt decoration, slight alignment variations in the transfer pattern, foot rim wear, kiln stilt marks, and impressed or printed maker marks on the underside.
