Devotional plaques were personal religious items made from tin-glazed earthenware or majolica, designed for private devotion within domestic interiors, chapels, or external walls. Popular throughout 18th-century Europe, especially in Italy, France, and Spain, they featured relief carvings of the Virgin Mary, saints, or biblical scenes.

These plaques were typically moulded from earthenware clay to form a raised relief design. Following an initial kiln firing, the piece was coated in an opaque tin-based glaze, hand-painted with oxide pigments such as cobalt blue and iron yellow, and fired a second time.
