William Greaves "Newlay Locks, Leeds" Oil Painting

Description

William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.

"Newlay Locks, Leeds" is a fine large example. An oil on canvas measuring 24"x 36" is is signed lower right and is dated 1882. It is framed in a wonderful period gilt frame giving an overall size of 36"x 48".

*On the Leeds-Liverpool canal, Newlay is a flight of 3 locks, built between 1770 and 1777. Dressed millstone grit walls ramped up to lower 2 gates; steps on each side, steel footbridges have replaced the single wooden bridge on downstream side of each gate. Overflow on S side. The canal between Leeds and Holmbridge, near Gargrave, was opened in 1777; the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was completed in 1816.
