Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Paris during the late eighteenth century, the cheval mirror, or cheval glass, gained widespread popularity during the Regency and Empire periods. Its name derives from the French word for horse due to the four-legged frame design that supports the full-length pivoting mirror glass.

Cheval mirrors from this era were typically constructed from high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often accented with brass or gilt-bronze fittings. The mirror plate was made from thick glass silvered with mercury or tin backings, held securely within a solid timber chassis.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved structural details, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, and period-appropriate brass hardware such as adjustment knobs and castors. Examining the back of the frame usually reveals hand-sawn timber panels and mild oxidation or foxing on the glass plate consistent with age.

A cheval mirror functions as a focal architectural element when placed in a master bedroom, dressing room, or spacious hallway. Pairing dark mahogany timber against neutral wall palettes or contemporary minimalist furnishings creates a sophisticated contrast that highlights the pieces sculptural silhouette.

Dust timber frames regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain to maintain the finish. Clean original mirror glass using a damp cloth without harsh chemical solvents, ensuring water does not seep beneath the frame edges.
